So what is the point of Valentine’s Day?
A brief history of the day shows that a pagan ritual feast was probably overtaken by a Christian holiday feast which was then either gradually (and naturally) associated with romantic love or maybe intentionally re-associated with the concept of romantic love by a British poet from the Middle Ages while somehow being misinterpreted by later historians that suggested that things simply always were that way.
Probably to buy candy and Hallmark cards, really.
In 1589 a knitting machine was invented that allowed socks to be created much faster and more efficiently. Socks started going mainstream and poor people had one less thing to whine about. (One down and about seventy trillion to go.)
Queen Elizabeth I refused William Lee the first patent for the invention of the knitting machine. She did not deny that he invented a machine that would create socks, she just didn’t care for the socks it created, preferring fancier silk socks exported from Spain.
